It’s kind of a general technique you have to work out with drawing corners and such when working with geometric shapes and forms
8:09 PM
I’ll elaborate
8:09 PM
8:10 PM
If you look closely at this doodle I did about a week ago, all of the boxes mf devices hooked up to this little freak are squares and rectangles but the edges are more impressionistic and the corners are rounded
8:11 PM

Edges can be defined by these slight impressionistic strokes

Creases and crevices probably should not be lit like they are, since light would bounce out of them. For example, under the collar, under the chin, between the fingers, in the armpits etc. Ambient occlusion and all that.

Small detail, but the eyes are also on a flat perspective while the head is at an angle
7:17 PM
A good way to fix that is while doing your structure, have a horizontal curved line across the circle structure of the head of where you want your eyesight to be, and draw your eyes along that line
Avatar
taking this advice for my own abhorrent work
7:21 PM
Shitty doodle in Instagram stories but it gets the point across
7:22 PM
Think of the vertical guideline on the circle as where you want the tip of the snout pointing, and the horizontal being where you want the eyes to sit
Avatar
can use two vertical lines to get the same spacing between the two eyes.
Avatar
Yes, I usually just eyeball spacing but if you don't have that ability, two vertical lines really help
7:26 PM
A common practice is to just put an third, same size eye in the middle and that's usually appropriate spacing

if im using my entire arm to draw the line, as in pulling the pen torwards me with my arm, the line wont always be parallel because its pulling the line towards me

Yeah that can make it harder for sure, but also means you do need to use your whole arm. Also, try giving your arm some speed, that makes the line less wobbly
6:37 PM
You'll sort of mentally connect the dots and your arm will quickly connect them with a line

What's the intent behind the light? The way it looks is that there's a small spotlight to the bottom-left and it's outdoors (because there's no reflected light) at night. But that doesn't match with the pretty bright backdrop.

The bright teal outline or the background? Added the outline cause I thought it'd look cool and well, Trite suggested it

OH-the background, it was a flat color intended to compliment the selections of colors-
9:54 AM
Didn't want it to be a PNG so I thought it'd also look nice.
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/26/2024 9:55 AM
It's just a mismatch between the brightness, the shading makes it look like a dark scene, but the backdrop is really bright.
Avatar
Mm-so I should have used a darker shade of blue instead, ye?
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/26/2024 9:58 AM
Well, sonething darker anyway.
10:05 AM
If the light is at the top-left, the head should probably be overall lighter and the belly should not be lit from below. The ground and tail should be reflecting some light, adding a bit of lighting on the back, butt etc. It kinda looks like it's shaded with gray, which is not usually a good idea because standard monitor color space only has 256 grays to work with, which isn't enough and leads to banding. Using a coarse brush like this makes it less of an issue though. Also, I'd suggest using some gradients to help with light direction and such. Overlay and Soft Light are blend modes that are helpful in that regard. Putting a gradient into the backdrop also helps.

the composition has a lot of empty space on the left, which i think could have been filled by an exaggerated belly. The body itself feels like it's falling forward, the center of gravity is not supported correctly by feet.

You can take the background colour and use that to tint the visor a bit.

Mine it's either watching people have fun arting like RubberRoss when they do gartic stuff/Oogling at art I get fixated at looking, or one I usually do is draw friends as a surprise cuz I like getting their reactions and it gets me practice, also it's nice to spoil friends who deserve it

It's a mix of what looks appealing to you and if it makes it look relatively convincing to the audience, like some areas having thicker lines to emphasize their depth hierarchy like thicker lines depicting that's where they're pushing against the most and thinner lines be parts where they're like pretty deep in the get beneath the layer of stomach they're protruding against. Other times line-weighting is just an aesthetic pursuit on the artist's part

6:51 AM
i've ran a couple oneshots before but this would be my first for real campaign i'm running, hopefully long-ish term
Avatar
hmms... ok, personally, if i was a player, i'd want the races formatted like the official things so it looks familiar, and i'd like more defined features so you know what you're getting if you choose the race. if i was a player, i'd rather the GM tell me "we need to tweak this" once or twice than wonder "what does this feature mean" for the entire campaign
Avatar
i didn't think to format it like the official races actually
7:05 AM
could be a good idea
7:05 AM
i really should like write down the specific abilities and whatnot, but i'm only having about 3 players so it'd feel bad to waste a lot of time writing that all out when only half of it's getting used
7:05 AM
(2 at this rate, the badglings seem to be popular amongst them rn lol)
Avatar
ah. then that makes sense. as a lore doc for just "these are the people of this world" you definitely don't need to flesh out all the abilities n the like if players aren't gonna use em. but i would write up the races that players are going to play
Avatar
i'll get right to that then, tyvm. I have a pretty good idea for what their like main ability will be
7:10 AM
the badglings that is

and since I'm not releasing this out to a broader audience I don't need to worry about like balancing or anything that much. so the rules on this will be pretty lax: once per long rest, make a fantastical feat of strength. fell a tree across a chasm, hurl a minecart of dynamite at the dragon, or something similar. however, this only recharges if you long rest after a good ass feast
7:12 AM
if wotc wanted to release something like this it'd probably be kind of a nightmare to specify and clarify the exact rulings on it but i'm not too stressed about that. or maybe i should be?
Avatar
imo, homebrew is always a mess. it's always tailored to your group, and very rarely will people be able to pick up even the best homebrew and just drop it in their game without modification
Avatar
that's a really good point.. I suppose anything can work out as long as I'm tweaking it according to their feedback and stuff
7:20 AM
then ironically I guess the part I should be more worried about is presenting the races to them and getting them properly excited for what they entail
7:21 AM
I'm trying to add a good gameplay hook to each race too, like lopefolk coming with a special magical focus (and also not needing to attune themselves to the leyline before being able to cast spells)
7:21 AM
badglings making fantastic feats of strength, plague cats bending fate with their magical fleas, etc. and I'm realizing now that reformed kobolds don't really have a gameplay hook yet lol, what would a good one be? (edited)
Avatar
i also warn you to consider how classes interact with your racial features, cause a barbarian doesn't seem like they can benefit much from free spell preparation or a spell focus, but they can benefit from just having access to free spells or a breath attack like what other races offer (edited)
Avatar
yeah huh. i guess some of these races are pretty class specific
7:23 AM
lopefolk and rune owl are magic coded, embracer kobolds and badglings are martial coded
7:23 AM
and plague cats and reformed kobolds are kinda properly adaptive to any class
Avatar
a wizard can still benefit from feats of strength
Avatar
lol that'd be a very funny character
Avatar
you can still have magic coded races, just make their abilities work with not magic classes
Avatar
noted. what do you think about locking races out of certain classes?
7:26 AM
i don't really like the sound of doing that, but i just don't think many badglings even bother with magic because of their kind's fear of the leyline
7:27 AM
there could also be an outlier badgling who had a dream about magic blessing her and she's one of the few badglings that doesn't mind magic
7:27 AM
and if a player wanted to make that their character i thiiink i'd be okay with it. i dunno how to feel about that
7:29 AM
i'm mostly just yappin now tho, ty for the advice!!
Avatar
i think class-locked races only really work if they're setting dependent, but, personally, i think races should be able to work with any class, just in case you want to run niche edge-cases of people defying tradition n whatnot

Mink of the End 3/15/2025 3:23 PM
Random pile of things and examples.
  • Colored lighting and shadows generally look better. You got something relatively desaturated here.
  • The shading looks a bit "insecure", it kinda just hugs around the edges. It may help to put everything in shadow and then erase the parts that are in light to get over that. If you want to go for a cel shading kinda style, you can have multiple "steps" of shading so that you don't end up putting too much in darkness (although in my opinion cel-shading is way harder and requires much more precision than soft shading, so I wouldn't go for it.)
  • An Overlay layer helps add depth and color to light and shadows, compare the "overlay on" and "overlay off" variants. The "overlay only" shows what's on that layer in Normal mode, it's just some blotches for broad lighting.
  • Specular highlights (marked in blue) and Fresnel (marked in red) look good and help to add shape. Especially round things look more round when they got a Fresnel edge than if they just end at the darkest point.
  • Learning painting really helps, a lot of it applies to character shading and it makes doing backgrounds a lot faster than doing them with lines.
  • Learning what blend modes also helps, although Multiply for shading and Screen for lighting get you most of the way there. Although depending on how complex the patters are and how firm you are with painting, just doing it on a Normal layer may end up being easier.

Not sure if you care to do this, a lot of furry art doesn't do these. But you can figure out where the light comes from and separate the body to have a light/dark family. It helps me with keeping shadow parts dark.

Mink of the End 5/27/2025 4:52 PM
Correct to replicate the pose in the photo or with what you have here? Note how the torso is turned in the photo, it's a very different pose overall. What you have would look fine for covering his face from being sprayed with water or something though.
Avatar
The pose reference doesn't matter too much its just what I was using to get an idea just trying to get everything like, SORT of anatomically ok
Avatar
agony PFF
5:04 PM
I also do need to improve my understanding of how to sketch like, the skeleton
Avatar
i think the thing that can be changed to improve the pose, your not breaking the sillhouette, as much as your reference, which is where i think the appeal of the pose is
5:05 PM
5:05 PM
check out all the negative space here between the arms and the torso
5:05 PM
that really helps the readability of the pose
5:06 PM
plus i think the angle of the shoulders also helps sell it with the more exaggerated body language
Avatar
mhmm.. well, Im trying to learn, so I guess my next question would be how would I translate that into trying to use the pose to draw motz? or like, should I not worry about that
Avatar
i think understanding what makes the pose appealing to me and exaggerating it is my goal
5:08 PM
try copying the pose in person and see how it feels to do
5:08 PM
bonus points if you do it in front of a mirror

Agreed, I'm just nagging at yew because they say opposite to literally anything pffft But, I have no style as I haven't drawn enough to develop one or even "copy" someone else's, this gets into semantics a tad bit but like. For you guys, sometimes you will take upon someone else's style for the sake of a piece, in the moment you are doing this, I would not say that your style is their style, you are just using their style I do not have a style, if you could come up with a term and slap a label on what I draw it would be called like the blind artist or the crack trembler lmao

To be honest, I'm not sure. Chris gave a breakdown of the legs and showed me how the camera facing leg should be larger, in perspective with the hip My main critique ask would be on the face, since it's the only thing I didn't get advice for, just sort of drew it
5:10 PM
And even then I'm just for the moment copying the style of motz in his ref for the face so there will be certain style choices affecting like, how far the eyes are apart etc The maw, ears and hair id like to get a better grasp on
5:11 PM
I drew the popsicle stick ears because I thought it looked more in line with the circular limbs, but do want to learn how to draw them properly
5:14 PM
Another thing I'll ask is like. I've been learning a lot about geometric shapes etc And the way the artist that advised me to draw the limbs, feels like it's a lot more loose and forgiving in terms of entrance level Will continuing down this road and drawing the limbs loose n round degrade my ability to improve, is it something I can get back to later, like, I can unlearn and relearn a new way later?
5:15 PM
And I still want to practice proper hands and not the bitchsuit limbs LOL

BlinkBlink You can always learn and unlearn things you are not going to fuck yourself over learning a toon style and then later learning a realistic style, etc.. I have multiple styles I can draw, it just depends on learning what each style really looks like. On the face honestly it looks pretty good but I'm not sure where you're wanting to go with it, so what are you looking to do there? Uhh the legs are fine with that style of art, but if you want to work on shapes and sizes for em I'd work on posing legs and looking at how different types of legs and feet/paws look when weight is displaced at different angles. I tend to pick and animal and look for hundreds of different photos of em to learn how that specific type of leg works.
5:46 PM
I wouldn't really change that art, it looks GOOD.

eh, It gets into definitional territory there like yea the second you put pen to paper ever you have a "style" but its not rlly the traditional meaning of the word like, if you could attribute a title to the style it would just be uneducated/none, or the crackhead tumbler

The legs would be as long as the torso and the arms fully extended, wrist would reach the crotch area
Avatar
I am familiar with the proportions when fully extended and mostly flat to the body, I have trouble with getting the proportions right when taking perspective into account. and that there arent many good poses where the hands are just like... to the side

anyone use rebelle 7? trying to learn the program and it's going kind of mixed, used to clip studio. friend recommended i try and use rebelle due to my painterly style and i dunno, i feel like the oil paints aren't mixing at all which is what i really like about how i've configured my csp brushes. i really like the texture that can be made just by layering things, though (edited)

8:30 PM
first speedpaint using it, struggled a lot to get shapes down. i'm used to the DAUB brush sets for csp if anyone's familliar with them and has advice on switching over from csp, or if it's even worth while
8:31 PM
i feel like no matter how i adjust the settings though the oil paints don't want to mix with eachother on canvas, which sucks as it has a really impressive color mixing engine
Avatar
Mink of the End 6/13/2025 9:46 PM
From what I've seen, Rebelle sure has pretty marketing, but not much behind it. The pigment mixing algorithm is kinda cute, but in many cases, the simple digital "just average the channels" works okay enough. Learning the pitfall color combinations - where the R, G or B sliders are at opposite extremes and averaging them gives you grays - and just continuing to use your existing program is probably more productive.
Avatar
I’ve found perceptual color mixing to be incredibly useful to my workflow, Clip Studio has a feature that’s similar though Rebelle’s seems able to keep track of colors more efficiently. I like Rebelle’s base brushes and the texture I can get with them more than the brushes I use in clip studio but wish they mixed better. Hence me asking if anyone’s familiar with the program.
11:04 PM
I know Rebelle has a way of defining wet paint and dry paint on a canvas so I’m thinking it’s drying the paint too fast
Avatar
That said, did some testing and discovered the problem was my tablet's pressure settings being set to soft, so it was registering a lot of what I was doing with 100% pressure. Finnicking with this is getting results.

SO Rufus is around 5.5~ ft tall
8:14 PM
and I googled the height of a typical gas station standing cooler and its about 6 ft
8:15 PM
so correct me if Im wrong but I think the colored in red box would be ABOUT Rufus's standing height?
8:15 PM
he's not going to be standing for this but Im trying to like.. try way too hard for this lmao
8:16 PM
The goo machine looks too much like the slushie machine I used for reference, I might rip out the front top half and turn it into a giant vat
8:35 PM
have turned into the goo vat

fuck i have spent an hour 30 on just this RAHHHHH
Avatar
this is just a vague idea to show what im trying to do Ima take a break for now! but if someone can help me with the posing, im fine from redoing it from scratch! the red box is supposed to be his standing height so I think I drew him way too big among other things, but the idea is to have his legs spread out for stability while he leans back n just fckin guzzles goo™ (edited)
9:28 PM
This is moreso to express my idea than to actually be used as a base for anything
Avatar
if being exactly the right scale is important to you, i would suggest using a 3d posing software, but there is a way of finding the standing height in relation to this machine
1:19 AM
1:19 AM
made the character ft 5.5 and the box 6 feet tall
1:19 AM
wait no thats the cooler not the goo machine
1:21 AM
1:22 AM
the box in front of the character is 5 foot flat and the black box is 6 foot
1:26 AM
but if you wanna do it manually:
1:27 AM
take the flat surface of the reference object and draw a line from opposite diagonal corners
1:27 AM
1:27 AM
this way you get the exact half point
1:28 AM
use that center point to cut the plane in half and draw another x to split it into quarters
1:30 AM
continue to subdivide till you can get a good scale for its height then use that to reference for your character
Avatar

The pose feels very stiff currently, i'd suggest tilting the head back, and slouching the body more against the machine. If the horns are in the way just use them to can opener the machines tray. Then change the size of limbs for depth, distance from the perspective. Also they are askew to the rest of the setting, you might want to angle them more to the right side, align with setting. I hope thats a bit helpful

So I'm ALMOST finally done designing my sona's body markings after only 10 tries, last part is the tail... Fully patterned or simple swisher? I kinda like simple because it's less busy and extends the mane nicely but I'm not sure
Avatar
Phantasmagoria𓅓 7/6/2025 8:02 PM
Oh fuck that is hard
8:03 PM
Neither makes the design too simple or too busy, they’re both super viable

8:05 PM
I say go with the pattern, since the hair/mane goes all the way down and connect to it, only having the colors on the hair and not on the tail makes it seem a lil less consistent
Avatar
Fair enough, that's 2-0 for patterned so far :) Thanks for your thoughts
8:06 PM
Yeah I tried adding the white to the simple tail's tip but it looked wrong, same with red as accent (edited)

The monocolored one looks better to me, particularly from behind. Less patterns is also less work.

Yeah it's got one more niche advantage: Getting a suit of this guy next year and the maker doesn't do removable tails, so it'd be WAY easier to make a substitute tail for partial wearing lol

In that picture at the bottom, the artist used a box or rectangle as a base from what it looks like to me, not a circular shape like in your shapes above. But that picture at the bottom is not drawn in perspective, so trying to draw a 3D shape over it is not really gonna give you a good result. Can't tell what's going on in the other pictures.

spoilering for pr0n been beating my head on this one for a few months now, but i finally decided about halfway in to go the painter's route to coloring it since doing it flat just didn't make sense to me, so what was originally a simple flats comm turned into a painting exercise. there's still some things i need to work out like the sense of depth (adding grass infront of the feet/paws and shadows here and there) but i'd like a second opinion on the overall state of the draw. i leaned pretty hard on custom brushes for the grass since trying to manually paint in the grass gave nice results but looked too cartoony for the style i'm going with

Have watched now, this is actually somewhat similar to the things I've been prompted to study by the course I'm getting back into the course and right now it's getting me to for the next 2 weeks, carve into basic shapes, draw them rotating, and stretch them

So in the program Im following its stuctured like this sorta, I have a few daily tasks to do for a week (or longer if I dont get it) and then move on to the next rn im on week 6, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUcYTAiCQyQ&ab_channel=MarcBrunet so im gonna be trying to figure the things out in this video for the next 2 weeks

Basically, drawing shapes rotated, then stretch em then carve into em

I searched up 3d models of cubes to help but if anyone knows any specific reference that could help understand this kinda thing I can just look at how the video draws the shapes n stretches them etc but I want to not just monkey copy everything I see and put thought into it
7:36 PM
Ill definitely figure it out on my own, Im just about to head to work and cant practice anymore, so I figured i'd air this question out in case anyone happened to have an enlightened mind to smite me with

Within perspective it's really easy to draw shapes as you literally just follow the lines. But I realize I do actually struggle to comprehend how to actually rotate it I can see like.. "patterns", if you rotate a cube the things that stick out to me are the three corners that poke out, getting larger or smaller in relation to each other, with one face showing more surface area I can definitely draw extreme rotational transitions, like, facing left, facing middle, facing right, but drawing the in-between of those is very difficult

Does anyone know any tricks to make metallic textures look more metallic without doing too much shading? Working on a flat piece and not trying to do too much with shading but it does also have a suit of armor
Avatar
if you want to show off its shine in a simple way, you can do maybe like a star gleam or simple highlights. if you're hellbent on not shading, just being a normally-metallic object and having the colors should be enough. depends on the metal, but maybe some spots where oxidization might change the color, spots where you can express the material through its shape, like maybe with a persisting dent or a jagged rip. maybe make the outlines on metal objects sharper or thinner than the rest to make it stand out

brain cant comprehend making it any more complicated moving on to the next building
8:07 PM
Actually, how do you guys intuit perspective without tracing on the drawing? im trying to treat it like this is a building im looking at, thus inable to just draw over it (as it would be easy then)
8:08 PM
I use the perpective ruler within csp because I mean, it isnt cheating (I think?) as all it does is draw the straight lines from the perspective point for you, which you'd be doing anyways to follow perspective
8:09 PM
but to use the perspective ruler I have to find the points in the first place, and im trying to get the point accurate
Avatar
Mink of the End 11/21/2025 8:11 PM
No it's not "cheating", nor is it cheating to draw over a photo or 3D render.

im following the marc brunet course and for this week Ive been prompted to draw a couple street corners from reference

Im trying to only cut the corners that wont really teach me anything crucial. do you think it would be time efficient to just paste the image onto my canvas, find the perspective and just use it to double check how well im drawing it?
8:13 PM
I dont want to just trace the building obviously, so just having it visible the whole time seems a bit silly
Avatar
Mink of the End 11/21/2025 8:14 PM
I see no reason why you woudn't use the photo to place your rules.
8:15 PM
Other than skipping them altogether, but if perspective projection isn't intuitive for you, you probably don't want to skip them.

so I think what ill do is Ill paste the image onto my canvas to get a grasp of the perspective, place down the perspective points n horizone line via the ruler then after that ill make the reference invisible on the canvas and only use the reference on a different monitor, rather than drawing over it directly

You really only need it to lay down the rulers, I wouldn't keep it behind the canvas all the time if you're not gonna draw over it directly. You're trying to draw art, not produce a replica.
8:21 PM
Your drawing won't match up with the photo exactly, but that also totally doesn't matter.

yep, thats what I gathered from what ye said that helps a lot I mainly just needed to hear that its not 'cheating'. and by cheating Im not refering to anything in the moral sense, I mainly mean in regards to cheating myself out of learning a valuable skill

Actually, how do you guys intuit perspective without tracing on the drawing? im trying to treat it like this is a building im looking at, thus inable to just draw over it (as it would be easy then)
if I were to just try to intuit the perspective without drawing over the thing itself it would look something like this in my head
8:32 PM

but with drawing over the actual photo I can see I was a bit incorrect with my intuition, the perpective point for the red line is way further in the distance and more flat/pov facing

Im very new to art though, if you want proper advice ask literally anyone else- though ive come to learn art isnt smthn that someone can just 'teach you' you can be taught fundamental concepts like how perspective works etc but someone can't just utter a phrase that suddenly makes you draw hands right (edited)
6:44 AM
they can explain like... "yeah break it into simpler shapes", then show you the simpler shape, And then show neat little like.... guidelines for drawing hands etc, and that does help a ton, but the only thing that will get you to actually draw the hand better is just trying it and failing a billion times

so I am on day 26 right now. I do believe I got better at constructing things and trying to imagine things in 3D. That might also just have been from me being able to turn off my head better in vacation. The main benefit is, its basically a: "Oi Bruv, you have to do your exercise, it takes like 2-5 mins, 10 maximum. and now as you have done it, you are in the mood to do more stuff"

I want to try to make my question as direct as possible but it's vague. I'm getting mixed up between simplifying shapes and creating a simple gesture roadmap

Rufus' body is a lot like this character but longer I can understand the shapes, I definitely need a bit more understanding of them but I have an elementary comprehension

The problem with this is that I started relying far too much on his ref to be able to draw him I'm trying to understand how the shapes work and interact with eachother and just RAHHHH
7:19 PM
I don't know what my question is my brain is shutting down I nap now 💤
Avatar
I have napped on it and I understand my question better
9:32 PM
Basically, in gesture drawing you are trying to just quickly sketch out a pose and get the "form" down as a skeleton blueprint to start adding layers and building everything up. I vaguely understand the basic shapes to an extent that make up my character, but I have absolutely no Idea where to begin when trying to draw out that first rough sketch
9:33 PM
What direction do I need to go in
Avatar
people have different shorthand technique for drawing characters quickly into order to rapid fire poses and trial/error to get the form down. But it always starts with an idea, what would the character look like in this scenario? more than just what pose, but what angle? what FOV, what perspective? what emotion do i want to convey? etc. those alone will change what the pose will be from the start. Then when you have an idea of what you want you can start with a skeleton. this can help you find form and try out different poses fast.
11:27 PM
i use a circle and alternating curves for the base of all my drawings where im trying to find a pose that works
11:28 PM
11:28 PM
but for characters with non human proportions you can still simplify their form into curves

I'm wanting to be able to draw Rufus at different angles than the one found in his ref but when I try I end up getting frustrated and just start following the ref way too heavy

gotta get out of your comfort zone and draw him in weird poses that push your understanding of his shapes

Mhm I want help with this because I feel I'll be more confident after doing it- But help is a lot to ask. I've had friends draw out a pose for me to emulate and am very appreciative and it does help (thanks treehouse) but I really really need to understand how the shapes fit in space and just being shown the end result calculations doesn't help me as much with the problem itself
11:42 PM
I want to be able to do these kinds of calculations on the fly

would a list of written poses help with that?
11:49 PM

Definitely better I think it just made you a better eye copy
2:26 PM
If that's what it's going for then gj
2:26 PM
But I think learning to construct the shapes is more useful
2:28 PM
The original skull image is a bit misleading because it leaves out a lot of the construction necessary to make it
2:32 PM
The artist has done that construction many times and visions it in his head so he doesn't have to draw it on the paper, but you still need to learn it/ put it on the paper in order to draw this skull more convincingly.
2:34 PM
Unless it shows you in the video every step that I'm not seeing, it would be better to break it down into easier shapes

I think my biggest problem is study time
5:56 AM
more specifically, I am incapable of studying for longer than like an hour, 2-3 hours if im like SUPER motivated but thats rare. I am beginning to try and reaserch better ways to study effectively
5:57 AM
I have learned that most people cant study for longer than 20 minutes at times before their brain shuts down, but an hour is still too little
5:57 AM
In my research I have come across the pomodoro technique (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomodoro_Technique)
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a kitchen timer to break work into intervals, typically 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Each interval is known as a pomodoro, from the Italian word for tomato, after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that Cirillo used while...
6:00 AM
I am going to try it out and will tell you how I feel. I've also learned what a proper break is- key points I can recite off the top of my head
  • you want to leave the area you study in
  • preferably go outside if you can
  • exercise is stimulating
and In the looking ive been doing, apparently people are able to do 9+ hours of study doing this method
6:01 AM
if I can actually pull it off, then Studying the human face will not bother me at all, because ill be getting 9x the substance from my studies and such should improve faster anyways
6:01 AM
the reason I ultimately had a problem with studying human facial structure is Im impatient and feel like my time isn't being used in a way I want, so if I can use my time more effectively, this problem will become a non issue

Pomodoro seems to be going well, I'm over an hour into intense study and still going, where as before I would have started to glaze over at 30 minutes
4:37 PM
I'm missing a key few points though The app I'm using is imperfect and fails to auto start and sometimes fails to play noise but I don't have time to fix it rlly so I have to just keep visual contact of the timer (you are supposed to not look at the time) I've eaten sugary foods (munched on ice cream, yummy but bad) But still, going better than I usually do without the method

Anyone have any resources on deforming shapes? I have particular issue with understanding contour lines, namely on cylinders, struggle to deform them
12:26 AM
Haven't begun to try shading yet but I'm starting with deformation
12:28 AM
Avatar
To be more specific about my problems This is where the problem begins for me with cylinders
12:49 AM
I can make the first line well but then the other line that denotes the rest of the cylinder I have problems with
12:50 AM
And then after that I struggle with contour lines
12:56 AM
To be more specific I get contour lines when the cylinder is straight- you just copy the curve of the top of the cylinder When the cylinder is curvy in any way, including like, "L" shape bends in a pipe, I do not know how to correctly denote this with contour lines
1:02 AM
And I think this is my biggest hurdle when it comes to deforming shapes

I can do it when it's not a cylinder

Absolutely true, art really is the interpretation of life, even if something isnt real it doesn't have to be physically accurate. Sergals are great examples of something that isn't real but can look real even if facing the front, it just takes artistic liberties and intuition (edited)

Draw the boxes, and then after you get the boxes drawn, round out the sharp points. Then add where you think the nose slits, would be, then next work on the eyes after the nose slits are where you want them, then the mouth, then your horns(or ears). Break it down, stop trying to do it all at once at first, it might help?

and I dont think im supposed to only do gesture drawing pff

you ever just doodle n sketch for fun?

i personally think a comprehensive drawing program is better for people who have been drawing for a while, because they'll be in a better position to learn. they'll know what their strengths and weaknesses are and will know how to use the program

I at the very least should be at a level where im wanting to doodle in my free time

what im basically thinking is like... drawing at all right now requires a lot of learning, yea? Im learning a lot of the fundamentals, and they are good and helpful. but what I feel I need to learn rn is just how to draw my character good enough for me to draw stupid stuff to please myself with, so that I can do so in my free time, as a comfort
1:10 AM
and then continue the guide when im already down to draw all day

again i feel its just consistency, with either character drawing or studying

Get Boxed Nerd. I did wanted to give a short 5 min sketch try at your boxyhead. So yeh I can see its not an easy thing to do to me. The main issue is, I personally struggle with the length of your head and the fact a "mental line" is missing to seperate front of snoot with top of head

Avatar
Ive noticed something with rotating rectangles specifically
10:54 AM
Im going to try and draw rufus' head in as many different angles as I can and I cant quite completely gauge Rufus' exact head shape but I think its only barely rectangular? like I think a cube with 1.5 x 1.5 x 2 works for the most part, the long part only needs to be noticably longer and thats it
10:55 AM
but I noticed while rotating a rectangle that, when you just begin to rotate it, it for the most part just looks like a cube
10:55 AM
To explain what I mean, this is the rectangle im working with for reference
10:55 AM
this is the same rectangle
10:56 AM
I almost feel like drawing rufus' face on this extreme an angle would be a bit too distorted? maybe I should basically skip drawing at this angle and just draw.. say...

Try drawing it at difficult angles, but fiddle with them until they look good, even if that requires incorrect perspective.

Basically what I think has clicked in my head is that certain angles are possible to be drawn but just wouldn't look good or be very valuable outside of learning perspective

I was given a shape guide for their other character of the same species, it's mostly very similar but trying to figure it out Want to be able to just doodle Rufus casually
If I use this as a reference for Rufus (same species) and look at the head on view I notice it isn't literally a box either, you can see both the mouth holes (which would be near the eyes for Rufus) meaning it's a lot more rounded
12:31 PM
Though I'll have to figure out how to actually express that

for anyone with an understanding of how pens work in clip studio, I would appreciate some help understanding whats going on here basically a friend gave me their pens, Im really excited using them, I know the pen itself doesnt matter and I could just use any pen and this is near meaningless to the learning problem
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/15/2025 5:43 PM
Those sure are arrows
Avatar
but I noticed when drawing that my lines have a taper to them that isnt in any of their drawings- its not just that the line tapers off but it also becomes more transparent
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/15/2025 5:43 PM
Stabilization?
Avatar
I know they have a super high transparency and my tablet is less sensitive
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/15/2025 5:44 PM
Stabilization or input smoothing can cause this.
Avatar
you can see here they are able to make their lines thinner without it having that weird like..... transparent stuff
5:44 PM
stabilization?
5:44 PM
Ill look into it, also apologies if Im a bit dense mink I appreciate your help fsjkdfhsdkjfh
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/15/2025 5:45 PM
As can stuff like velocity/speed inputs, if they make fast strokes and you make slower ones, the result will look different.
Avatar
let me try to see if I can fiddle with them
5:48 PM
It shows there is no stabilization in the pen.. (yes theres a taper but while I call it a taper the problem obviously isnt with the taper itself but how it goes transparent)
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/15/2025 5:49 PM
Is there global stabilization or smoothing?
Avatar
I dont think clip studio has global stabilization- I googled it because I was curious if there was something overiding the brush settings but Im not finding anything
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/15/2025 5:50 PM
There's a "starting and ending" category, that looks suspicious
Avatar
I will note again, I know that they have super high sensitivity, the brush is made to be crusty and what I originally assumed was that the paint density is just too low with my low sensitivity
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/15/2025 5:51 PM
I don't know what "high sensitivity" is
Avatar
by high I mean very sensitive like, they barely put any pressure on the tablet when drawing
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/15/2025 5:52 PM
That's usually a matter of input settings. Might be worth adjusting your global pressure curve to something less carpal tunnel.
Avatar
mhm.. hrmm
5:56 PM
i have made a discovery
5:57 PM
I didnt realize but clip studio has a pen sensitivity setting and it adjusts automatically- when fiddling with it I made the taper worse LOL but this tells me that im going in the right direction probably
Avatar
ive fiddled with it more and found out this is the exact "issue" its the brush density set to pen pressure, if I turn it off completely there is no more transparent taper- but I want it on, just need to figure out how to adjust it to not sperg out
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/15/2025 6:31 PM
"Density" is a weird translation for opacity?
Avatar
The brush is made to be crusty, even the line brush i dont know the terminology but its similar to a spray can just in brush form?
6:35 PM
and the density is how much of the paint is applied per stroke
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/15/2025 6:37 PM
A pixel mask brush works by generating a bunch of "dabs", which are basically stamps. Those get put on the canvas next to each other to make a brush stroke. "Density" could refer to the opacity of the dabs, or it could refer to how densely the dab is populated, i.e. leaving out pixels at lower densities. (edited)
Avatar
wait I thought I figured it out but I came back to it and that didnt fix it im gonna do more digging my brain is melting pfff
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/15/2025 6:38 PM
In Krita, "density" is the latter anyway, in which case it'd be the wrong setting yeah
Avatar
yea I detatched both density of paint and amount of paint from pressure sensitivity, and its still doing this Im gonna start tearing everything down (in a copy brush) and see if anything I do makes it stop doing this lol
6:44 PM
I dont see any other settings tied to pressure at all but its something that only happens when im drawing lightly
6:45 PM
when i draw very hard this doesnt happen
6:49 PM
OK I have isolated the variable
6:49 PM
this was set to 75 and on pen pressure when I turn off pen pressure and set it to 100 it "fixes"
6:49 PM
so it was density
6:50 PM
6:52 PM
this was a pen made for their settings never meant to rlly be readily compatible my theory right now is that their tablet is very sensitive (they draw VERY VERY light) and this setting was set to be more of a very subtle thing and since its tweaked for their settings, my pen pressure was making it have a much more dramatic effect
Avatar
Mink of the End 12/15/2025 6:53 PM
Yeah, that's likely.
Avatar
with 100 density and not tied to pressure this is what my tips look like now, which is MUCH better (though I should probably figure out a way to preserve the pressure density setting and just tweak it to mine if I intend to use the brush as it was made)
6:55 PM
ty mink im sorry for my brain being a brick
7:15 PM

7:16 PM
the preview changes in real time and you can literally see as I up the "minimum value" the line becoming more solid
7:17 PM
7:17 PM
I just upped it from 0 to 36 minimum and you can see the tips are solid
7:17 PM
I love my red arrows
7:49 PM
IVE LEARNED MORE
7:49 PM
tablet and clip studio pressure settings can conflict with pen pressure settings
7:50 PM
I set both my tablet settings and clip studio settings to a straight line and now am using the unedited version of their pens and its working mostly fine, because their pens have a sensitivity curve built into them (which was conflicting and combining in a weird way with my default)

Really anything. I used to practice drawing different shapes at different perspectives back in school out of pure boredom and I think it helped quite a bit.
12:43 AM
I would also trace random artwork I'd find of stuff I like online, first by printing the image out and drawing the lines over another paper, then by transcribing things from one medium to another. Did a bunch of that and it helped steady my linework by a lone, for both straight and curved lines.

My main thing is I feel like my drawing mechanics on paper is clashing against my drawing mechanics on tablet I started feeling good about drawing elipses on paper and curving lines because ive been practicing at work Got home and got to the tablet and tried to recreate the same shapes and was facing difficulty

Ya. This is a problem most artists hit when they go from one medium to another, esp with traditional to digital. Had this issue myself and still do. The only way to get over that is to just keep practicing with your tablet. There's no real better way without maybe investing a stupid amount of money into a tablet that emulates the texture of paper better (i assume such things exist).

Definitely use a stabilizer on your brushes for starters, about 11-12 is good enough for smooth lines without any lag. Work on larger resolutions, 3000x3000 worked for me initially. Also try using smaller pen sizes, I use 5 and low pen sensitivity for sketching/lining now and I have much better control over important things like line weighting

Those burnout periods usually come when you do a lot of learning. It's good to take breaks and just let your brain stew over everything while you enjoy yourself/do other things. Just be sure not to fall into the trap of always procastrinating, you'll have to force yourself to draw at somepoint in order to get the mood for it back.

This is a question for Dms mainly This isn't a vent, I'm ok, I'm considering the application of therapy for multiple reasons but one that interests me is trying to build better habits and pursue goals more effectively If anyone here has experience with therapy please hmu I'm like dudhfhfhfgdgd

that's how it was for me at least

and recently i noticed i get bored while watching youtube and that would make me want to do something else, usually eating/porn/more youtube videos. So i just started to have something productive open on a second screen that i can switch to when i get bored of youtube

I weened off games entirely and that helped a lot, been playing a couple games again because Im gonna be very busy but yarr, toning down on time wasters helps

I had an irl situation that reverted me a bit, dropped the good habits I was doing, stopped going out to buy groceries on time / meal prepping / exercising etc Next month I'm gonna be doing CDL schooling for 6 weeks to far a better job, and I figured if I'm gonna get insurance I could actually try therapy out

So I'm making some older (2023) art into prints for LVFC and this is one I'm trying to just do some.. like minor lighting adjustments but Idk if I'm over thinking it at this point/if I should just leave it as it was. (edited)

So some parts are layered and other parts kinds got merged when iwnss painting. The character is isolated for thr most part so editing him is easy
7:14 PM
All I did was slap on like a hard light (I think) layer of purpleish color over the cat and lightly erase some areas i wanted to stay brighter. Not too tricky

yeah just make the character less bright to give this picture more contrast

How do you guys stomach lineart… My style, in the way that’s most efficient for me, has a sketchy quality by nature, but if someone wants a flat coloured pic it means I can’t fill bucket my way through unless I make a neat outline. And that process is miserable
10:58 PM
(Funnily enough I typed this out like 2 months ago and then today thought of saying the exact same thing, so I came in to ask and the message was already ready to post since last I checked this channel. Same wording I was about to use too lmao)
10:58 PM
Obviously I just haven’t found a lineart process I like but god I don’t think I’ll like any process of it lmao

I initially read this as "How do you guys do stomach lineart" lmao

I very much the same issue with lineart, in fact its the part where I tend to procrastinate the most on a drawing. Painting goes much faster, even.
Avatar
Yeah riiiight same!
Avatar
Anyhow, I suppose it doesn't matter too much if your lines end up being on the sketchier side if you're satisfied with them. Cleaning up your linework is always the hardest part of a drawing imo because it's the part where, if you haven't perfected your sense of shapes and volumes n such, you'll notice a lot of flaws since the sketchier nature tends to leave more room for your imagination to make it look good
1:33 AM
Always be researching, looking up guides and referencing art styles you like a lot. Something I started doing recently was switching the pen pressure sensitivity so that all my lines end up being very light, then making several passes when lining it in as though I was drawing traditionally
1:35 AM
It's a bit of a vague advice but I haven't seen too much of your artistic progress to know what exactly your struggling with

I Do a bunch of illustration and line work
1:42 AM
The main thing is that linework usually takes the longest
1:43 AM
either approach has it's advantages, but still will take time as most artist do
1:44 AM
I will give some pointers on it
1:46 AM
Main thing when it comes to line work there are two methods vector or hand drawn with clean up
1:48 AM
Vector makes the lining process a lot faster, but downside is that it doesn't put any of the darker muscle areas like it, because it's just lining and is not going to act like what you are drawing is a 3D shape
1:48 AM
1:49 AM
This type of line would be hard to do with Vectors
1:52 AM
Meanwhile if U take the hand drawn method it will take longer, but allows U to add darkness on your lines where there will be no light present creating kinda like the concave line I screenshotted on the buttox
1:53 AM
When it comes to line work, don't think of it as just outlining your character, but also as contour
Avatar
Yeah. Vector is honestly great if you don't care too much about using your linework to imply depth. Good for a more cartoony style and cellshading
Avatar

Better example of line quality From Kyomi
1:56 AM
1:58 AM
Anywhere light can't be present add darkness through your Line work to that, because usually your lines will be your darkest value on your character
2:01 AM
Anything that overlapse I front of the character usually uses lighter more lines as to not make the lines will be that way as to not have the line work look the same as the line work on the external parts
2:02 AM
Basically you don't want inner detail line work look directly connected to the outer otherwise it looks like a tangent
2:03 AM
Also I have two more tips
2:03 AM
Use textured pens when doing line work
2:04 AM
It's a personal prefers I know, but I was a bit dismissive of the at first, but adding texture to your drawing gives a lot more personalit
2:07 AM
I was supposed to finish this by easter but
2:08 AM
2:11 AM
Textured line work looks a lot more sound to me than the perfect lining pens I used to use
2:14 AM
Last tip I will give for lining is that when a 3D object is close make them thicker and further away make it lighter, but be mindful of your 3D shape and the contour and tangents
2:16 AM
I Hope it helps ^^

2:28 AM
Here’s some examples of my stuff thus far I actually have no issue with my style itself, the sketchy texture is like my signature thing that everyone knows me for haha The issue is that flat colour just is an annoying hassle because I can’t paint bucket (I legit haven’t used that tool in years) and have to manually colour everything, and even then it doesn’t pop as well unless I actually do lineart… it’s so frustrating that I usually prefer not to do it ever @w@

For context it's a brush that setting that makes it so your lines don't cross over the lines on your reference layer

So CW: Diapers But here’s stuff that has more of a lining style that I actually find visually appealing. The pigeon one is my favourite by far (edited)

Thicken your line quality in darker areas with the contour
2:35 AM
And make sure to make lines thicker with closer objects
2:35 AM
Also add highlights

Anti-overflow pen brush?
I've not explored that actually I dunno what the settings for that is on CSP and it's probably not even a thing in Procreate buuuuuuuut.... it sounds like something nice to have. My biggest problem is just that my brush texture makes it so something like a fill bucket is actually too exact and precise on the pixel for fill bucket to actually feel nice haha. If this sort of brush can fix that that'd be great xP
Avatar
Avatar
💾//:Winded💚
And make sure to make lines thicker with closer objects
Oh I do intend to do this one, especially now that I'm doing more perspective work, but as far as like line quality and thickness stuff goes I'm kinda happy where I have it personally. My issue is more just that I don't want to do lineart like at all. If I could consistently get away with it like in those first two coloured pieces I posted I would so much rather do that haha ~w~ but unfortunately the last three pieces I posted look kinda good to me (edited)
Avatar
The bucket tool thing, is it like leaving a bunch of transparent pixels around your linework?
2:40 AM
It kinda sounds like you wanna do painting if you don't want to do linework
Avatar
I do painting! I actually prefer that! I feel like I only have a flat colour tier to my comms to make something more affordable for people, and also to broaden my horizons
Avatar
I see I see!
Avatar
But though I like the idea of having flat colours I just don't like doing it. I hate it so much lol
2:41 AM
I like the results I get sometimes but again it's just a slog. Especially when there are parts I don't want to make a decision for yet, like miniscule details I'm unsure about lol
Avatar
Well, the anti-overflow pen stuff worked great for me in any case... You can use it to erase too, so what I normally would do is use it to fill in all my colored spaces with a flat gray layer, use the anti-overflow to erase all the bleedout and then lock my layer to edit non-transparent pixels only
2:42 AM
(I think it's called alpha lock but CSP doesnt use that term)
Avatar
mhmm it's alpha lock elsewhere I'll have to honestly just try one out lol or make one
2:44 AM
I'd have to have a pen that is... my signature pen... so I'd have to edit it or make my own, but it'd be nice haha
Avatar
It's a setting you can toggle under brush settings, lemme see if I can get a screenie
Avatar
Winded mentioned the texture brush and it's funny cause that's literally all I use Outside of a pixel brush, I am allergic to fully solid brushes 😅
2:45 AM
Forgor it had its own tab.
Avatar
Ooooh I see I see...
Avatar
But yeah, try using that as a ghetto paint bucket.
Avatar
I'll have to start using CSP again...... ughhhhhh..... beggars can't be choosers though xP I'll still have to figure something out for Procreate though, cause it does not have that lol
Avatar
I usually have it set to a big size and use it over the bucket tool since the latter is really garbage in CSP
Avatar
Avatar

Be mindful that if your textured brush leaves gaps, the overflow setting might not work very well
2:48 AM
Also Procreate doesnt feature an anti-overflow setting from a cursory google search, sadly :(
2:49 AM
Could just use CSP to fill in the colors, then export it back to Procreate..? (Idk if they have compatible file types, probably do tho since most software supports psd) (edited)
Avatar
They do but we'll have to see haha I have to ideally find a way to stomach lineart on purely procreate, since that's my main one
2:50 AM
(It's portable, that's what I got the tablet for. Since I travel a lot, it's very convenient)
2:50 AM
I actually broke up with CSP after spending a year with this tablet xP
Avatar
Is the bucket tool just leaving a bunch of transparent pixels along your linework, or is it bleeding out and coloring the whole canvas?
Avatar
Either or depending on the picture
Avatar
Huhh. Well, the first one you can sorta get around by increasing the tolerance on the bucket tool, if Procreate supports that
2:52 AM
Essentially allows the bucket to expand its fill radius by whatever amount you set it to. But I personally found that it doesn't work very well with CSP.
Avatar
Yeah it works only a liiiiittle better in procreate. I legitimately save time just outlining with the main colour and filling that in lol
2:54 AM
It'll probably honestly just take me suffering through till I see what sticks xP And of course trying out a few of the things Thank you both for your input though, genuinely appreciate it haha. Sorry to be stubborn about it 😅 (edited)
Avatar
Of course. Hope any of the things I suggested helps, Ive had the same headaches with coloring back when I started experimenting with it so I know the frustration
2:56 AM
It's one of the reasons I don't use wildly textured brushes for linework anymore, too much trouble with getting the lines to fill in xvx
